#440, by Deadpool on Thu 04 Jun 2009, 05:55 am

I have two monitors, I don't really play computer games, but I will need something that runs 3D studio max and Zbrush well. Let's say something under $1200.
#439, by viper on Thu 04 Jun 2009, 04:12 am

So i picked up Mass Effect. I am only a few hours in but already I love this game...the fluidness of the RPG choices during the conversations is great and the excellent voice acting has me hooked. Though the great big 'what-if' has me wondering if I should have started playing as an arrogant renegade first instead of my current goody two-shoes hero. Either way..its already worth its $20.

If bioware makes the new star wars game anywhere near this quality its going to be a great play. Here is some new Old Republic eyecandy from E3...I found it full of win. http://e3.gamespot.com/video/6210694/?hd=1

Deadpool: If your video card has any type of color enhanciness features, turn them off.

Last I checked, NVIDIA called theirs "Digital Vibrance"

ATI refers to them as simply "Color" in their overly named Catalyst Control Center.

If you have an Intel video card, get me to either build you a new computer or find you a better laptop.

Good luck! :D
#391, by Matt on Thu 14 May 2009, 10:44 pm

JASON - I installed Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" on my laptop. Everything worked... EXCEPT the wireless adapter.

I have the Broadcom card BCM4306 rev 03.
It seems this card is particularly persnickety. It's SUPPOSED to work out of the box, but it doesn't. When I list the network adapters from the terminal, it shows up as DISABLED, and I have no clue how to enable it.

It's rather frustrating, and the forums and wiki are a mess.

You have any idea how to get this card working on my system?

If not, would you happen to know if Arch has the same problems with this card?

#379, by Matt on Tue 12 May 2009, 12:11 pm

Me too, and I agree 100%

I'm actually surprised I liked the Star Trek movie as much as I did, because I actually hate the Star Trek franchise, but it ended up being a damn good movie.
#378, by Deadpool on Tue 12 May 2009, 12:10 pm

When I first got the leaked version of Wolverine I said to myself "I'll go see it when it comes out in theaters and take a couple of people, that way the universe will balance itself out". And just as I suspected I wound up hating it, so instead of paying for tickets I snuck people in to see it, hoping in some way this would punish the movie.

It is astounding how poorly made this thing is, all the CGI and green screen stuff was very obvious. It has the dumbest fucking ending of all time which seems only fitting since the whole thing was so fucking idiotic! For those who haven't seen it Sabretooth and Wolverine kiss and make up on top of a cooling tower as it collapses, why? As it turns out Sabretooth, oh I'm sorry Victor there is actually no fucking way of identifying Liev Shriever as Sabretooth. Anyway it turns out he just misses his little brother and in fact loves him so much that he went along with the main villain's convoluted plan in order to get him back. Arguably the single greatest feud in comics history reduced to this barely coherent mess.

Then Logan gets shot in the head with an adamantium bullet and somehow looses his memory, the end. Fuck this movie.

So, I've seen the Star Trek and Wolverine movies.

I think the Wolverine movie reminded me why I stopped seeing movies so often.

Star Trek was good though.

The previous star wars MMO did do a horrible job of providing the players with what they wanted. Yet I do know people that are still playing the game because its star wars, and that's enough for them. Thankfully this new one is coming from Bioware, which is notorious for excellent quality games. (much like blizzard was before the WoW release). They seem be keeping with the current working formula and just adding their own flair to it. To be sure, there are many landmines to avoid...but so far I like what I see.
#343, by Matt on Fri 17 Apr 2009, 12:17 pm

At this point, I think it's going to take a huge franchise on the level of a Star Wars or similar, that has a huge cult following, to even make a blip as a WoW contender.

The thing with Star Wars is that apparently the previous attempts ain't all that great. I wouldn't know from personal experience, but that seems to be the buzz near as I can tell. At some point how much can you tarnish the reputation of the franchise to where people lose faith in it?
#342, by viper on Fri 17 Apr 2009, 10:19 am

Currently I am waiting for the new star wars MMO to be released. And I hope they take their time with it. I think it has some serious potential.

#339, by Matt on Thu 16 Apr 2009, 09:05 pm

Okay, now that I look a little closer -- I guess that actually makes WoW EIGHTY (80!) times bigger than CoH, and 10-times the size of the second-place Massively-Multiplayer game.

In fact, you really can't compare WoW to anything else in that space... it's like Microsoft in its heyday and there isn't even a scrappy little Apple, Inc. around to kick up some dust. There's just a bunch of random Linux builds getting distributed through Bulletin Boards while the Blizzard Guys (TM) are riding around in giant gold-plated cars encrusted with diamonds.
#338, by Matt on Thu 16 Apr 2009, 09:00 pm

I have no idea how big Blizzard's staff is, but I'd be inclined to agree with you re: them having more than 50 on the janitorial staff.

I do think the 50 people is accurate for CoH, however, because let's face it -- it's a niche game and like 1/10 the size of something like WoW, and that's not an exaggeration (note that I'm not a WoW advocate by any means, as I refuse to play any subscription-based game).

I mean, City of Heroes doesn't even qualify for the "big boy" chart here: http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html

They're on the Tier 2 subscriber chart witho only about 140,000 subscribers http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart2.html (as compared to 11+mil at this point for WoW).

So yeah, I can definitely believe that a game like City of Heroes would only need about 50 folks to run things.
#337, by viper on Thu 16 Apr 2009, 07:11 am

I came across this little tidbit about City of heroes. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/cityofheroesarchitectedition/news.html?sid=6207897

50 people? Is that accurate? I bet Blizzard has more than that on its janitorial crew.

#331, by Matt on Mon 13 Apr 2009, 02:09 pm

It's not so much the noise from the case as it is the fact that the CPU fan and the GPU fan and the PSU fan and the hard drives will all be exposed to the open air, which means that there is nothing damping the hard drive seeks and access clicks and the spinning of those small, high RPM fans on the CPU, GPU, etc... with a traditional case, especially a nicer one, all of those internal noises are damped by the casing.
#330, by wildfire on Mon 13 Apr 2009, 01:48 am

The noise is not to bad, the giant fan on top is huge, but doesnt need to be able to dice incoming fowl to move air decently.
#329, by Matt on Mon 13 Apr 2009, 01:27 am

Holy shit. That is the damndest looking case I've ever seen. Awesome if you swap out parts a lot though. However, I'd be concerned about the noise, as all the various system fans will be exposed at all times.
#328, by wildfire on Sun 12 Apr 2009, 01:37 pm

And Satan, the only thing that could make that shirt any better is if the last combo was "X, Square, Triangle, L1/R1 + Triangle, L1/R1 + Square, X, Square, Triangle, L1/R1 + X, O, X, Square, X."

But that is just me...
#327, by viper on Sun 12 Apr 2009, 04:35 am

So im starting to look at computer equipment again. I want to do a daisy chain of upgrades throughout the rest of the year. My first step is to get a new computer case. My current one isn't long enough to hold my video card and a 3rd hard drive(the card extends into the last hard drive bay) Since I am getting a new case I'd like something appealing enough to get it up off the floor and onto the desk without looking like a monolith from 2001.

I like the idea behind the skeleton case...

If you require some degree of portability and don't necessarily need a battery, the HP Touchsmart IQ500t series with the optional NVIDIA 9600M (512MB) graphics card might be perfect for you.

It's a 22" Touchscreen PC
Base specs:
- Vista Home Premium 64-bit
- 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400
- 4GB DDR2 800MHz
- 320GB 7200RPM HDD
- NVIDIA 9300M (256MB) *Upgrade to 9600M for $40*
- Slot-load "SuperMulti" DVD-Burner

The series also comes with a Wireless-N adapter, Bluetooth, a 5-in-1 card reader, a TV-Tuner & remote control, and a wireless keyboard/mouse. Generic 2.0 speakers are integrated in the chassis.

Well it does seem like a waste to get a Notebook just to play fallout since for the most part I only play console games.
#303, by .aero on Tue 31 Mar 2009, 02:45 pm

Bethesda excels at making good games with horrible stability.

I would not get a notebook if one of the primary reasons you'll be using it is gaming. Portable and powerful are still difficult (expensive) to combine and come with dramatic trade-offs.

Big display? Crappy portability.
Powerful CPU/Graphics Card? Crappy battery life.
#302, by texaspete on Tue 31 Mar 2009, 02:05 pm

I honestly have no idea what to tell you, except that Rob also happens to have a problem running Fallout 3 on his PC due to him having the "magical" combination of quirky hardware (mobo+vid card) that causes problems for the game. As for the PS3... well, if you can, I'd take it back and say the damn thing doesn't run and pick up the PC version instead.
#299, by Deadpool on Mon 30 Mar 2009, 09:59 am

FWIW, for those who may wonder, Fallout Tactics - while a great game that's worth playing - is not part of the 'official' Fallout canon or continuity (it's also a tactical game, and not a turn-based RPG).

For anyone who wants to play the original Fallout games (1&2), you can get them from http://gog.com for a relative pittance. DRM-free and tested to work on modern systems!

GOG is a game download site that caters to 'classic' games that deserve to have a rebirth in modern times. They take old games and strip the DRM and package them up so that they will work on modern PCs and then sell them for cheap. It's a cool gig.

Duke Nukem 3D is also up there for like $6.

This game is awesome. Be sure to get all 8 achievements so that you can see the end.
